What is VOIP?
It's like traditional phone service, but so much more!
VOIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol, also known as IP Telephony or Digital Phone Service, whereby your voice, during a phone, call is transmitted over data networks in order to reach the call destination. This means that call traffic is transported inexpensively and efficiently resulting in cost savings to those savvy enough to take advantage of this technology like you.
In traditional analog phone systems, Circuit Switched technology is used on Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN). While the start up costs for analog lines are nominal, the recurring costs per line, taxes, plus any features can add up quickly.
To help offset these costs and gain features, businesses in the past have often turned to Key Systems, CENTREX and PBX systems. While these systems offered more robust features, they still rely on the PSTNs and costs per call for local, long distance and toll calls outside their business are significantly higher than they would be on a VOIP system.
With the use of VOIP technology, the need for analog lines is reduced by 95% to 100%. The result is cost savings, as call traffic is efficiently routed over computer networks and the internet. It uses the PSTN only to convert a phone call via a coder-decoder (CODEC) back to an analog service in the event the end user is using analog services. And, unlike the Key, CENTREX and PBX systems, the startup costs for VOIP are significantly less for more features and functionality! NOTE: Analog lines may still be required for local ordinance such as fire alarms or legacy security systems.
